چکیده

The solid waste residues from olive oil mills constitute an environmental threat if disposed of in the natural environment, as it is common practice in many areas. This review summarizes the efforts of the scientific and technical community to develop appropriate technologies for the valorization of these wastes. The majority of the research towards this purpose focuses on the recovery of high-added value compounds, the production of adsorbents, the production of compost or soil amendment products, and applications related to energy generation either through biotechnological processes or through advanced thermal processes. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Wastewaters from the olive-oil extraction process: disposal or valorization? Otpadne vode iz procesa ekstrahiranja maslinovog ulja: uklanjanje ili valoriziranje?

Olive vegetation waters (OVW) represent a serious environmental problem for the solution of which several disposal methods have been proposed, such as, e.g., physicochemical treatments (decantation with lime and/or total oxidation; concen-tration, drying and incineration; ultrafiltration and reverse osmosys), agronomic (acquaculture; landspreading) and animal-breeding methods (direct utilizatio...

Influence of Substrate Concentration on the Anaerobic Degradability of Two-Phase Olive Mill Solid Waste: A Kinetic Evaluation

The evolution of modern technology for olive oil extraction has affected the industrial sector depending directly on the by-products obtained. The traditional three-phase continuous centrifugation process for olive oil extraction was introduced in the 1970s, notably to increase the processing capacity and extraction yield and to reduce labour. This three-phase manufacturing process of olive oil...

Composting olive mill pomace and other residues from rural southeastern Spain.

The costly disposal of the semisolid residual pomace generated in the two phase extraction used in modern olive mills is causing serious problems to the small oil producers of rural southeastern Spain. Composting may be a viable alternative since complementary residues are usually available in these areas to prepare an adequate starting mixture. In this work, four different combinations of resi...

Sustainable cultivation of olive trees by reusing olive mill wastes after effective co-composting treatment processes

Olive oil production is associated with extremely polluting byproducts causing serious environmental problems in most Mediterranean countries. These highly polluting residues are currently disposed of in the soil, rivers or lakes or where treatment methods have been applied, they were proven insufficient or nonfeasible under the Greek situation. On the other hand strict EU environmental legisla...

Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Olive Industry Solid Waste into Glucose, the Precursor of Bioethanol

Olive industry solid waste (OISW) is a by-product generated in the process of olive oil extraction. It is a lignocellulosic material consisting of cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin and other extractives. In this work, a process for hydrolyzing the OISW into its monomers glucose, the precursor of bioethanol was developed.  The hydrolysis process involves two stages: in the first stage, the O...
